DataDonor – Citizen-Created Data Can Strengthen the Future Healthcare System

As many of us own a smartphone or use other wearables, we are accumulating large amounts of data about ourselves. Data that we, more or less unconsciously, pass along to large companies, which often use it for commercial purposes. But what if we could use that data for something greater?

DataDonor - Doner dine data til gavn for vores fælles sundhed

DataDonor – Donate your data for the benefit of our shared health

At the Health Innovation Centre of Southern Denmark, we have developed DataDonor – an app that makes it possible to donate activity and movement data to research and development projects in the public healthcare sector.

Donation of citizen-created data can help improve prevention and treatment – and potentially save lives.

We offer:

  • DataDonor enables users to donate activity and movement data for the benefit of developing a better healthcare system.
  • DataDonor makes it possible to collect citizen-generated activity and movement data for research and development projects.
  • DataDonor focuses on creating transparency regarding what and to whom you donate your data, as well as supporting the debate about the value of citizen-created data.
  • DataDonor offers secure storage of data on the Region of Southern Denmark’s servers.
  • DataDonor provides consent management via MitID.

How does DataDonor work?

The infrastructure behind DataDonor is built as a project platform on the Region of Southern Denmark’s Nomad platform. The user gives consent via MitID and chooses which projects they wish to donate their data to. Consent can be withdrawn at any time. Data is transferred via integration with Apple Health or Google Fit.

Projects in DataDonor – Various Possibilities:

  • Anonymous donation to identify trends and tendencies at the population level. For example, finding out how much data donors sleep on average.
  • Pseudonymized donation for comparing, for example, individuals and groups. Here, data donors will not be identified by name, but only by a unique code. This will make it possible to compare, for instance, the number of steps between individual x and y, or between different age groups, genders, etc.
  • Personally identifiable donation for research and development projects that wish to enrich other information with activity data. The system is designed to protect and manage sensitive personal information, such as Social Security numbers.

As a researcher or project owner, you can define which activity data you wish to have collected for your specific project. It is possible to collect both anonymous and personally identifiable data, and there is also the possibility to access past (retrospective) activity data, as long as the smartphone or device has been recording it.
